. the white house reports for now that meeting is still on the president's schedule. toyota now and what a day. the troubled company will soon pay the largest fine that the united states government has ever issued to any automaker anywhere that is if the government gets its wish. the transportation department pushed toyota to pay $16 million as a civil fine for failing to notify regulators promptly about its pedal problem. that is the maximum penalty allowed. the company now has two weeks to either accept the fine or decide to fight it toyota's recalled more than million vehicles worldwide because of those sticking gas pedals, which we're told could leave drivers behind the wheel of a run away car. peter barnes from the fox business network is live in washington tonight. give us the details behind this final. you know judge napolitano was on with us in "studio b" today when this story broke and he said that doesn't sound like much to me but i guess the max is the max. >> that's right, shep. toyota failed to notify the national traffic safety administration of the sticking problem for at least

to a lower court to determine whether that move was legal. first, it was sudden acceleration. now toyota is having the exact opposite problem with some of its vehicles. the japanese automaker recalling 50,000 of them due town expected slowing. the recall effects 2003 year model toyota sequoias. the company reports the problem involved the suv's electronic stability control system which maintains traction during turning. toyota claims the system can kick in at low speeds thus preventing the driver from accelerating as quickly as he or she might like it. fixed the problem midway through the model year and it's already repaired about half of the affected vehicles. toyota has recalled more than 8 million vehicles all totaled worldwide since just last fall. pope benedict the xvith may apologize for the church's handling of sexual abuse cases. that's what the cardinal in charge of those cases is now reporting. he tells the public broadcasting service that the pope may offer the apology when priests from around the world visit the vatican in june. some the victims claim the pope didn't do nearl

or so, officials from toyota have now reported that they are taking one of their very popular models off the market after an extremely rare warning from "consumer reports" magazine. it says do not buy the lexus gx 460. toyota owns the upscale lexus brand. "consumer reports" says the suv has a problem with its stabilization system. in short, it could just roll over. drivers for the magazine reported a fishtail effect that could cause the vehicle to upend itself. toyota now reports it will at least for now stop selling the gx 460. we're told the company will conduct its own tests on the suv and then decide what to do next. toyota is already suffering a bruised reputation after it recalled millions upon millions of vehicles because of the problems with their accelerators. now to the adoption outrage and word that the woman who sent back her adopted son with a note attached did it even while she was trying to get another child for adoption. the report comes from abc news information from sources at the sheriff's department. remember the woman in shelbyville, tennessee adopted this kid from r

: well, in other news tonight, the automaker toyota has just announced another recall. this one effects about 600,000 cinema minivans. model year 1998 through 2010. people could see corrosion from the road salt in the spare tire cable. worse case scenario they say the spare tire could fall off the minivan and cause a big problem for whatever vehicle is behind it the automaker is still working on a fix here. folks with cars in this recall should go to their dealers for an inspection. this, of course, is just the latest in toyota's recall troubles which effect more than 8 million cars and trucks around the world. tonight, we are getting a new look at the inside workings at the controversial move by the central intelligence agency. new documents now indicate that after the cia disobeyed a white house order by destroying videotapes of interrogations, the agency's director said he was okay with the decision. here's the back story. it starts in 2002, when cia agents were holding these two suspected terrorists in thailand. we have since learned that the agency used waterboarding on those suspe

you. for all of toyota's problems the reports of sudden acceleration, the recalls of millions of vehicles. tonight, a brighter spot for the japanese automaker. it reports u.s. sales sored last month in response to some unprecedented discounts to try to win back its customers. gerri willis from the fox business network is live with us to take us through the numbers. >> let's start with toyota. that's how were talking about up 41% in terms of march sales mostly because of big-time incentives they gave despite headlines, despite the recalls. ford, too, doing really well here, up 40% in sales. ford could claim that it has some new brands that they are repromoting, in cars, rather than trucks. big change there g.m., up 21%. but if you back out the old lines that they are getting rid of, pontiac and saturn, they were up 43%. really good month for them. but chrysler, the one outlier here down 8%. having a hard time keeping up with all this money being thrown at consumers. they are really having more of a struggle than any other automaker. >> shepard: obviously the bigger the discount
